You do not need an entire garage to build an effective home gym. With a few carefully chosen pieces of equipment, even a small spare room or apartment can support serious strength and conditioning workouts.

Here are seven categories worth considering.

  1. Adjustable Dumbbells

Few pieces of equipment offer more exercise variety in less space. A good adjustable pair can replace an entire dumbbell rack.

  1. Adjustable Bench

A bench expands what you can do with dumbbells by supporting flat presses, incline presses, rows, seated shoulder exercises, and more.

Choose one that can be stored conveniently if space is limited.

  1. Resistance Bands

Bands are inexpensive, portable, and easy to store. They are useful for strength exercises, warm-ups, mobility work, and assistance movements.

  1. Kettlebell

A kettlebell works well for swings, goblet squats, carries, presses, rows, and conditioning exercises.

An adjustable model can save even more room.

  1. Pull-Up Bar

A doorway or wall-mounted pull-up bar adds an effective upper-body pulling movement without occupying much floor space.

  1. Exercise Mat

A decent mat makes floor exercises, stretching, mobility work, and core training considerably more comfortable.

  1. Compact Cardio Equipment

If cardio matters to you, consider equipment that matches your available space.

A folding treadmill, compact exercise bike, walking pad, or jump rope may make more sense than a large commercial-style machine.

Build Gradually

The best home gym is not the one with the most equipment. It is the one containing equipment you actually use.

Start with the exercises central to your training and buy equipment that enables those movements. You can always expand later.

For many people, adjustable dumbbells, a bench, bands, and some form of cardio equipment already cover most of what they need.
